5 beauty lesson to learn from jlo & kim k’s makeup artist, mary phillips

Make-up artist mary phillips on underpainting, the future of latte make-up and her go-to lip combo

Blend your concealer flawlessly with this unlikely brush

Using an eyeshadow brush for concealer? Actually groundbreaking! This month, celebrity makeup artist Courtney Hart went viral on TikTok as she detailed her experience assisting other MUAs in the early stages of her career — during which time she witnessed these artists swapping out traditional concealer brushes for eyeshadow brushes to help blend out the under eye area. As demonstrated in her video, this technique begins by dabbing concealer onto the back of your hand before pressing the product into your eyeshadow brush. Next, you’ll use a buffing motion to blend it all out. “This just gives a very different finish than if you were swiping with a concealer brush,” she explains. “It very much gives an airbrush finish to the makeup.” Complete the look by softening the edges with a beauty sponge to give you that seamless final touch.

Prep is everything for a long-lasting lip

According to Phillips, lip prep is crucial when using a matte lipstick. «I like to really hydrate,» says Phillips. «You just want to make sure that the lips start off nice and hydrated because you’re not going to be wipe it off and start over again.» She also recommends using a lip scrub or running a dry toothbrush over your lips to exfoliate and get rid of any dry skin which a matte formula could cling to.

Berry lip sleeping mask

This lip mask is TikTok viral for a reason. Prep your lips the night before with this mask and wake up with silky-smooth lips.

Mango Lip Scrub

If you’re battling with dry, flaky lips, this lip scrub is a great way to prep for lipstick.

Hack the perfect braid every time

The art of hairstyling is complex as it is, but attempting your own perfectly centred braid that hangs down your back in a proportionate manner is an entirely different beast. As seen in a viral video posted by @audreyvictoria_that racked up 37 million views, our next hack is the answer to all your plait prayers. Begin by sectioning your hair into three parts, and tie the middle section into a ponytail at the centre back of your head. Next, cross the remaining sections of hair overtop your ponytail to hide the hair tie and proceed to braid as usual with all three sections. Lock it in with another hair tie and there you have it — a picture-perfect plait hack that works every single time.

Use two different foundation shades

Turns out, Phillips often uses two different shades of foundation to help give the face dimension. «I use the lighter one on all the higher points, like the tops of the cheekbones, the higher part of the jaw and the middle of the forehead. The darker shade I like to use on the perimeter around the forehead, under the cheekbones, under the jaw and a little bit down the neck, just to ensure the colour matches,» Phillips explained during her masterclass.

L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24hr Freshwear Liquid Foundation

Yes, this is the foundation Phillips uses on Kendall Jenner.

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

Luminous Silk is my personal go-to foundation all year round.

Layer a little at a time

«It’s easier to add more than it is to remove,» Phillips explains. Therefore when it comes to applying your base, she recommends applying very thin layers to ‘build up’ the coverage.

«I can do up to five or six super-thin layers when I’m doing make-up, because I want it to be as thing as possible, but as sculpted as possible as well.» Demonstrating her underpainting technique, she applied a thin layer of concealer before adding another light layer of foundation.

Tinted Moisturiser

If you really want to go for the less is more, this tinted moisturiser is great for those barely-there make-up days.

Hourglass Veiil Hydrating Skin Tint

Phillips’ other very famous client, Hailey Bieber, is a big fan of this sheer skin tint.

4. Use the three-dot concealer trick

It’s easy to quickly pile on a lot of the best concealer, but actually, three dots applied to the right places is all you need.

«I like to start with the corner of the nose, then right in the front of the eye and then at the end, right below the outer part of the eye,» Phillips explains. This technique is designed to ‘lift’ the face. «It brings out the centre part that we want to highlight. Place the three dots and blend out in an upward motion to really lift everything up.»

L’Oréal Paris Infallible More Than Concealer

The concealer is so easy to blend, you’ll want to use it all over your face (but try to stick to the three-dot method).

L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Filler Line Plumping Water Cream

Phillips diluted a bit of the Infallible 24H More Than Concealer with some of this cream for an even easier blend.

5. Underpaint for a convincing contour

Remember the underpainting trick I mentioned earlier? It’s the best way to contour and sculpt without looking patchy or stripy. It’s all about contouring before you apply your foundation. «I highlight , contour and then foundation,» she revealed.

Contour Wand

This easily blendable formula is the contour product of dreams.

L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24hr Freshwear Liquid Foundation

Phillips went over her underpainted contour with this lightweight and buildable foundation.

7. Overline your lips (but only a little)

If you thought the days of overlining your lips were over, you’re not alone. However, Phillips says it’s still the best way to achieve a full lip look. The hack? You just have to be subtle and clean up any mess.

The Phillips trick is to do a tiny bit of overlining to define and lift—applying the liner just slightly over the high points of the lip line. «I always like to soften the line a little bit so it’s not too hard, and then if I have to go in with a little bit of concealer on the brush, I’ll do that to make the line crisp,» she explains.

3 Она делала макияж Дженнифер Лопес на «American Idol»

Apply Your Concealer To The High Points Of Your Face And Blend

Using your favourite creamy and super supple concealer, Mary advises the next step is to swatch your concealer over the high points of your face, or places you’d like to conceal, cover or illuminate. Typically, this would be your undereye, on your forehead and your chin.

Once the product is applied, you want to go in with a fluffy brush to blend the two together. What is important here is to try to blend everything as seamlessly as possible.

Sure, it still may feel a little harsh but once the foundation is diffused over your entire complexation the end result will be a dreamy, flawless base.

Mary Phillips’ Makeup Tips: Brows

Phillips isn’t just an ambassador for Tweezerman. She’s exclusively used the brand’s products for as long as she can remember — but she’s careful not to overuse the tweezers. «You have to give them some love and let them grow a little longer,» Phillips notes on trying to get a feathery brow. And consider the type of room you’re in when tweezing away. «If you aren’t sure what to remove, I would leave and see what they looks like in different lighting.» It’s better to leave more hair than to keep plucking, in her opinion.

Her secret weapon on getting full arches can be found at your local makeup counter. Phillips is constantly using a spoolie brush when applying any type of eyebrow product, noting it helps distribute the color through the hairs. «If I want to make the brow a little bigger or if they are missing hair in a certain place, I’ll fill it in with color and then brush it,» she explains.

Finding The Perfect Foundation With Mary Phillips

Mary Phillips knows a thing or two about foundation – it’s like your canvas, and getting it right is key. Her top tip? It’s all about matching your skin tone and understanding your skin type. Mary’s a fan of having a range: thick, full-coverage foundations for those red-carpet moments and lighter, sheerer options for that ‘no makeup’ makeup look. She recommends the Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24H.

Long Wear Matte Foundation for a matte finish that lasts. But if you’re into something more natural, she suggests going for foundations with a thinner, serum-like consistency. These let your skin’s natural beauty shine through. Mary’s advice: don’t fret about having every shade. Just a few in light, medium, and dark can be mixed and matched to get the perfect color.

Eyeshadow Palettes: Building Blocks Of Eye Makeup

According to Mary Phillips, the right eyeshadow palette is your secret weapon for eye makeup. For beginners, she suggests starting with a palette that includes matte neutrals – they’re timeless and versatile. These basics can be your daily go-to, perfect for a range of looks from subtle to dramatic.

Once you’ve got your neutrals down, Mary encourages you to add some shimmer and experiment with colors. A great place to start? The Maybelline The Nudes Eyeshadow Palette. It’s budget-friendly and offers a range of shades perfect for playing and exploring. With Mary’s tips, you’re all set to create eye looks that turn heads.

Enhancing The Eyes: Eyeliners And Mascaras

Mary Phillips knows that eyeliner and mascara are the finishing touches that can make eyes pop. She leans towards creamy eyeliners for their smudge-friendly yet stay-put nature. Her favorite? The Victoria Beckham Beauty Satin Kajal Liner is perfect for creating everything from a sharp cat-eye to a smoky look.

When it comes to mascara, Mary’s all about volume. She recommends the Lancôme Monsieur Big Volumizing Mascara for its ability to give lashes a full, dramatic lift. It’s these little touches, according to Mary, that can elevate your eye makeup from everyday to extraordinary.

The Importance Of Lip Products In Makeup Artistry

For lips that speak volumes, Mary Phillips swears by the power of a good lip liner. She ranks it even above lipstick in terms of importance. According to her, a liner can define, shape, and even fill in the entire lip for a long-lasting color. And don’t forget a clear gloss – it’s your lip liner’s best friend, adding shine to any color.

Rethinking Makeup Essentials: The Surprising Product Mary Phillips Skips

In a plot twist, Mary Phillips rarely reaches for primer. She believes in prepping the skin with the right skincare to create a flawless base. For Mary, a good skincare routine trumps primer, setting the stage for makeup to glide on smoothly and last longer.

There you have it – insider tips from Mary Phillips herself! From foundation fundamentals to the perfect pout, her guidance is a goldmine for anyone looking to up their makeup game.

Sculpt your face with the viral Mary Phillips underpainting technique

If you don’t frequent #beautytok or haven’t seen an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race then you may not have heard of underpainting— but you’ve certainly seen it on your favourite celebs. It’s the secret behind Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber’s chiselled glam look, after all. Recently popularized by their very own MUA Mary Phillips, this technique involves contouring and concealing beneath your foundation — as opposed to the standard practice of completing these steps on top of your complexion base.

In her first TikTok post earlier this year, Phillips can be seen carving out her cheekbones, jawline, and forehead with bronzer followed by a bright layer of concealer and highlighter — all before she goes in with a foundation. “It’s like laying down the bones under the skin. So the contour and the highlight being the bones, and the skin being the foundation,” she says in her post. Wondering when blush comes into play? The MUA revealed in another post that she layers this step over her foundation so that the pigmentation can really come through.

Get the Victoria’s Secret Angel sun-kissed look for the summer with… red blush?

For decades, we marvelled at the bombshell beauty looks that came down the runway at Victoria’s Secret fashion shows — but who would’ve thought that a red blush was behind their natural flush? RMS Beauty founder and makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift took to her brand’s TikTok account to reveal that while working backstage with the Victoria’s Secret Angels, red was her go-to shade of blush. “What the red does is give that little bit of depth to it and it looks more natural,” says Swift in the video. “Almost like the sun kind of gave it a little hint of burn.” And as we’ve entered the month of June, swapping our pink blushes out for red is the beauty trick we didn’t know we needed to try this summer. To achieve the look, grab any cream blush shade with a red tint to liven up your cheeks.

Mary Phillips’ Makeup Tips: Eyes

«Curling your lashes definitely makes them look longer because a lot of people have either straight lashes or they go down, and curling them up wow,» she says. However, she notes that there are two different types of eye lash curlers: one for almond shaped eyes and another for round. «This one is for almond, it’s flatter and wider so you can get all the way to the base of the lash and give it a curl,» she tells me while holding Tweezerman’s ProMaster Lash Curler. Alternatively, if your eyes are round, she recommends using the brand’s ProCurl Lash Curler. Once the lashes are curled and ready to go, she’ll grab her favorite mascara — Armani’s Eyes To Kill. And for those days when you really want your eyes to pop, Phillips suggests applying a few individual lashes.

Celebrated for her ability to create looks that are both timeless and modern, Mary’s philosophy revolves around accentuating the natural beauty of the face. Her techniques, known for emphasising luminous skin and eyes that captivate, have become the gold standard in celebrity makeup.

The Foundation: Skin Prep

Mary Phillips believes that great makeup begins with great skin. She consistently highlights the importance of a thorough skin prep routine involving cleansing, moisturising, and priming to achieve a flawless base. This ensures that your makeup looks impeccable and wears beautifully throughout the day.

Selecting the Right Tools

Another cornerstone of the Mary Phillips makeup tutorial is professional-grade tools. Quality brushes and applicators are crucial for achieving the precision and blendability Mary’s looks are known for. Investing in the right tools can elevate your makeup application from amateur to expert.

The Mary Phillips Makeup Tutorial: Step-by-Step

Let’s break down the Mary Phillips makeup tutorial into manageable steps, guiding you towards mastering her signature celebrity makeup look.

Step 1: Pristine Skin Prep

  1. Cleanse: Begin with a clean canvas using a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type.
  2. Moisturize: Hydrate your skin with a lightweight moisturizer. Mix in a bit of illuminating primer or liquid highlighter for an extra glow.
  3. Prime: Apply a primer to smooth out the skin’s texture and ensure your makeup lasts all day.

Step 2: Achieving a Flawless Base

  1. Foundation: Apply a foundation that matches your skin tone using a damp beauty sponge or brush for a seamless finish.
  2. Concealer: Use concealer to cover imperfections and brighten the under-eye area, blending well to avoid harsh lines.
  3. Set: Lightly dust translucent powder in areas prone to shine or where concealer was applied to set the makeup in place.

Step 3: Eye Makeup That Speaks Volumes

  1. Eyebrows: Define your eyebrows with a pencil or powder, mimicking natural hair strokes for a fuller appearance.
  2. Eyeshadow: Opt for neutral shades, applying a base colour, a medium crease shade, and a darker colour on the outer corners for depth.
  3. Mascara: Finish the eyes with a few coats of mascara to add volume and length to your lashes.

Step 4: Sculpt and Highlight

  1. Contour: Use a contour powder or bronzer to define your cheekbones, jawline, and face perimeter.
  2. Blush: To add a natural flush of color, apply a peach or pink blush to the apples of your cheeks.
  3. Highlight: Apply highlighter on the high points of your face for a radiant glow.

Step 5: Perfecting the Pout

  1. Lip Liner: Outline and fill your lips with a lip liner that complements your lipstick shade.
  2. Lipstick: Choose a lipstick that enhances your natural colour, applying it directly or with a brush for precision.
  3. Gloss: Add a layer of gloss over your lipstick for a fuller look.

Mary Phillips’ Viral Makeup Technique

Like most viral makeup techniques (see: the sleepy eye technique), Mary Phillips’ viral makeup hack involves subverting how you’d conventionally use your makeup products and tools.

The result is a supermodel-approved way of applying your foundation, concealer and contour for an almost texture-less and softly sculpted complexion.

This application technique requires minimal effort—seriously, it only uses five products max—zero skills (though be prepared to do some blending) and leaves you looking snatched for the gods.

Don’t believe us? Simply look at the almost 2 million TikTok viewers trying this viral method for themselves.

How To Apply Mary Phillips’ Makeup Technique To Look Like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner

Remember when we said this look was incredibly easy to replicate? We weren’t lying, trying this look will only take three steps.

So put the notebook down, grab your makeup bag and get ready to commit this method to memory.

The secret to Phillips’ flawless foundation look is pretty much reversing the order you apply your makeup. Genius, we know.

They say if it’s not broken than don’t fix it, and while it may be true Mary is giving us a reason to look at things from a new perspective.

Rather than layer your creamy contour and concealing products on top of a thin layer of foundation, Philips advises that the best way to achieve a bronzed, blended appearance is to put foundation on last. Mind. Blown.

Here’s exactly how you can achieve the Mary Phillips foundation look:

Apply Your Cream Contour To The Parts Of Your Face That You’d Typically Bronze

You may be thinking that contour should be the last step, but here Mary recommends using it as the first step.

On a clean, skincare-prepped face, apply a cream contour to the parts you’d typically bronze. This is usually the natural shadow sections of your face, like below your cheekbones, underneath your jaw and on the bridge of your nose.

Using a cream contour rather than a powder contour allows for greater control and gives the product more depth when you blend it out for a perfectly carved cheek.

At this stage in the routine, you may feel like you look like a circus clown with harsh, un-blended lines but fear not for this is only the beginning.

Mary Phillips’ Makeup Tips: Prepping The Skin

Doubling as a celebrity makeup artist and esthetician, Phillips takes prepping the skin *very* seriously. «If the canvas is good, the makeup is going to look good,» Phillips tells TZR. «If the skin is dry, then the makeup will look dry.» The makeup artist achieves a clear complexion using La Mer’s cult-favorite products. First, she starts off using the brand’s , making sure the skin is fully clean. After, she’ll apply either or . For ultimate hydration, she opts for the ever so popular . To finish off, Phillips reaches for .

Surprisingly, primer is the one prep product that doesn’t make the cut in her routine. She admits she’s never really been a big user of the stuff. Instead, Phillips opts for La Mer’s concentrate to do all the priming before makeup.

Mary Phillips’ Makeup Tips: Base

«I like to apply foundation first, and then if there are any little areas I’ll use concealer instead of going in with more foundation everywhere,» she explains. For her clients that struggle with acne or any blemishes, she addresses the area with a method called micro-concealing. Using a tiny brush, the makeup artist will sit and apply concealer strategically. «If theres a divot or bump, I’ll use a darker shade,» she explains. «And if it’s indented, I’ll use something a little bit brighter inside to pull it out.»

And for the dewy look she’s undoubtedly mastered, her technique includes applying a liquid highlighter underneath foundation. Another trick up her sleeve includes a non-makeup product. «Sometimes I’ll take a little of Crème de la Mer and pat it on the cheekbones or down the nose,» she notes. «It rehydrates the foundation and gives everything a glow.» A second product Phillips skips? Setting spray. «I would rather people be too shiny than matte. It looks healthier,» Phillips says.
