Clayton Hawkins

Hairstylist

Hair maestro Clayton Hawkins got his start in the beauty business by assisting editorial hairstylists shortly after graduating from beauty school in 2014. Known for his comedic wig-wearing posts on Reels and TikTok, the Living Proof ambassador says his top career moment to date was going with high-profile client Olivia Rodrigo to the White House in 2021 “to promote vaccine awareness. Doing her hair during such a unique moment in time felt like I was a tiny part of history.”

TOP 2023 MOMENT Highlights of his year include creating Ashley Park’s gorgeous wavy locks for the Joy Ride premiere. “It just felt like such a classic, timeless moment,” he says.

Tracey Cunningham

Hair Colorist

It’s an L.A. story: Three decades ago, Tracey Cunningham started as Bette Midler’s nanny and is now considered the town’s top colorist with the roster to prove it (new clients are via referral only). The self-professed workaholic co-owns Beverly Hills salon Mèche, flies globally for touch-ups, is an ambassador for Olaplex and Redken, and authored 2021’s True Color: The Essential Hair Color Handbook, which features her famous clientele. Dakota Johnson — who met Cunningham as a girl when her mother Melanie Griffith “started seeing Tracey for hair color in 1996” — tells THR that “Tracey’s talent and expertise will forever confound me. She’s really a magical artist scientist. I will show her a photo, or I will use descriptions that make no sense like ‘dusty roasted milk’ or something ridiculous and she absolutely nails it every time with really no confusion, stress, or fuss.”

Balletcore

The balletcore aesthetic grew even bigger over 2023, bringing with it soft pinks, bow details and silky finishes, and its set to continue into 2024. “If 2023 was all about Barbiecore, 2024 takes it to Balletcore,» confirms Tinu. “Think subtle and creamy pinks, frosted nudes, and milky whites in short, clean shapes,” she says.

Michelle agrees. “Balletcore nails are the easiest trend to wear, they suit every skin tone and they don’t show up much if you get a chip,” she says. “It includes every shade of sheer pink, but my all time favourites include Essie Sugar Daddy and Mademoiselle,” she adds, before pointing out that celebrity fans of this look include Dua Lipa, Georgia May Jagger and Charli XCX.

But beyond a pretty ballet pink base, this trend has room for some personalisation. “We will see an upgrade to the trend in 2024, with baroque embellishments, a glazed finish, and tiny adornments like bows, flowers, and gems,” says Tinu. We especially love glazed finish that nods to the silky pink of ballet slippers.

Christian Högstedt

Kara Yoshimoto Bua, a native of Santa Cruz, California, wasted no time exploring varied interests during childhood as she studied animals, nature, spirituality, music and art before getting “deeply inspired” in the height of the goth, punk, acid jazz and new wave music scenes during the ‘80s. Gigs after high school graduation working behind the makeup counter in department stores led to collaborations with local photographers which in turn led to doing glam for commercial and theatrical headshots. Soon she was studying under high fashion makeup artist Frank Armstrong, and after she outgrew the San Francisco scene, she moved to Los Angeles, where one of her first celebrity jobs was doing makeup for Friends superstars Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox for the Fire & Ice Ball in 2000. “They were the loveliest intro to the celebrity world,” says Yoshimoto Bua, who is now a Chanel ambassador.

Shade layering

Layering your polish shades is becoming quite the trend—and it’s hit the big time in 2024. In fact, I ended up doing it for the first time at my last manicure appointment. When I realised there wasn’t a shade quite what I wanted, my manicurist suggested I layer two colours to achieve my desired look, and it worked.

Manicurist says, «We’ve started to see polish layering a lot, which I think will continue into 2024. With more and more techs experimenting with different shades, I think we will see a lot of ‘custom mixes’ from our favourite, iconic brand shades. If your tech doesn’t have the shade you want, they may just make it for you! Start with the darker of the two shades and experiment with what looks good by swapping out what shade goes over the top! I love a black like ‘Liquorice’ from Biosculpture layered with a true red such as ‘Night At The Opera’.»

The one thing that I don’t do as a hairstylist — and people will be like ‘No, you’re full of shit’ — but truly, I don’t use a lot of products,” Farinah told Elle in 2018. “One, because I don’t want to confine the hair. Crafting Natalia’s Identity through Nail Art

Natalia’s journey into the world of nail art began with a simple desire—to create designs that resonated with her identity. «When I started doing nails, I dreamt of making designs that identified with me,» she shares. Her signature style, featuring intricate drawings of eyes on nails, was born from this dream. This choice of niche within the nail art community has not only set her apart but also allowed her to express her creativity freely and distinctly.

Going Viral Unexpectedly

Every artist has that one moment, a turning point that changes everything. For Natalia, it was an unexpected viral success. «I always remember using my sister as a model for my designs. There was this one design with many different drawings—I wasn’t too fond of it, but I decided to upload it anyway. To my surprise, it went viral in a matter of minutes.» This moment of serendipity significantly boosted the visibility of her nail art creations, proving that sometimes, the unexpected can lead to new opportunities.

Elegant and bold manicures

With almost 400 posts and over 150K followers on Instagram, @universenails18 page is filled with fantastic nail art designs and positive comments from other nail enthusiasts from the online community.

From her staple eye manicures that would complete any festival look, to seasonal nail illustrations for the most celebrated times of the year, her artistry has gathered many fans. Natalia’s hand-drawn designs showcase creativity, talent, dedication and precision.

Natalia’s Collab with MoYou London

A highlight in Natalia’s career came when MoYou London invited her for a collaboration. MoYou gave her the opportunity to create a set of three manicure designs, which were then turned into gel nail strips and marketed by the MoYou London brand. They portray the wide range of styles and aesthetics that @universenails18 is famous for. Check them out!

«Do things with a lot of love.»

Natalia Ortega Moreno

Advice for Aspiring Nail Artists from @universenails18

For those looking to carve out their own space in the nail art world, Natalia offers words of wisdom grounded in her own experiences. «Do things with a lot of love,» she expresses. When you love what you do, the time and effort you put into it feels rewarding. She also added that her nail artist career is founded on patience, discipline, and love and that every artist should have that. There is no denying the power of a strong social media presence also helps to showcase your work to a wider audience and make connections that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

Vampy Hues

We’ve seen a grunge-goth aesthetic come to the forefront—just look at Naomi Campbell’s new side-swept bangs or the slept in makeup at Tibi’s runway show. Nails, unsurprisingly, are following suit. “The classic hue of the 90’s is back,” says Rita Remark, Essie’s Global Lead Educator. “It’s not quite black, and not quite red, but deep vampy nails are the perfect complement to cooler, moody weather.”

You’ll want a black or brown shade with a hint of crimson or violet peaking through. “This complements all skin tones and is both stylish and timeless,” adds celebrity nail artist and founder of JINSOON Jin Soon Choi. “It is a great way to add a touch of sophistication to your fall wardrobe.” In fact, the brand was responsible for a similar look at Michael Kors Fall 2023 and Brandon Maxwell earlier this month.

Hairstylist (Rising Star)

“Technically my career began in 2006, but my mom will tell you I’ve been cutting hair off dolls since I was a kid!” says Dana Boyer, who worked assisting hairstylist Rudi Lewis when she was starting out. Boyer tells THR that the ongoing actors’ strike has had an impact on work this year: “There are less opportunities for work. I have been very, very fortunate to have regular clients who are either promoting music right now or attending non-promotional events. I have always maintained a fair number of ad clients and that also keeps me going in between personal clients.”

Jewel Textures

Hailey Beiber’s nail influence persists—the chrome and diamond dustings are only getting more powerful over the next few months. “We’ll be seeing a lot more texture and depth in our polish,” notes Remark. “Shifting iridescent, chrome, and frost are all back.”

The twist you’ll see on the trend this season? Creamy polish shades are tantamount. Seek out hues that appear to have a milky white undertone. If you can’t seem to locate the perfect shade—make your own. Mix CND’s Studio White or OPI’s Alpine Snow with a hue of your choice.

“A lot of trends come from a talented nail tech experimenting behind the scenes. All the design needs is to then get spotted on the right name for it to shoot to popularity.

«The ’dark academia’ vibe has already influenced fashion and make-up, so I think it will also make its way into 2024’s nail trends – brace yourself for the rise of deep burgundy, matte black and gritty purple, as seen recently on Margot Robbie and Rihanna.

I’ve always been a hair stylist,” Nelms tells THR. “I remember doing my friends’, family and even teachers’ hair in grade school. I even skipped my senior prom to do girls’ hair for the night. Bright and bold

If you’re bored of the milky manicure trend, Alyx has good news for you – brights are making a comeback, too. «For the last two years we’ve had a frenzy of sheer, barely-there manicures (which will definitely still be around), but I think the return of the bold nail will happen next year,» she says.

While oud nails and super-dark colours are having their moment right now (it’s winter, after all), brights are finding their place in 2024, too. «Everyone likes a dark nail in the winter but think cobalt blue for late winter, a cherry pink for early spring and lemon yellow in the summer. If you’re scared to have a bright shade, try it on a shorter nail—this always gives a nice balance without looking too much,» she adds.
